2014 - Launches to Orbit and Beyond

Listed are launches, irrespective of outcome, that were irretrievably committed to flight towards orbit or intended to accelerate the payload to escape velocity. The following notes should help with understanding the launch lists.

Launch times are in UTC and are from the launching agency or estimated by 'walking back' along the ground track to the launch site. Most orbit data and decay information comes from SpaceTrack but it occasionally contains inconsistencies (eg - incorrect re-entry dates or early sets of elements allocated to the wrong object) that need to be corrected from other sources.

To fill the gaps where elements are not formally published, usually because they have a classification of "Secret", some orbits are based on amateur observations using visual and radio techniques. Such data is published near-daily by Mike McCants, and the source observations along with observers' derived orbits can often be found in the web-based Seesat-L discussion group. Occasionally, early orbit data are published by satellite owners. In extreme cases, orbits are estimated from public data.

Space-Track occasionally fails to allocate names to objects in its catalogue. The SATNOGS online database of radio observations sometimes provides pointers to which Catalogue Number belongs to a satellite being tracked by its contributors.

Apogee and perigee are measured against a spherical Earth situated at the focus of the orbital ellipse and with a radius of 6378.145 km. Shown is the Anomalistic Period, or time to complete one circuit of the ellipse. It is not the same as the time taken to complete one circuit of the Earth. Care should be exercised when comparing with other published orbits because they may have been derived using a different model.

Users can go straight to specific launches by pointing to the page URL followed by the three digit launch number, eg - https://www.OrbitalFocus/Diaries/Launches/Launches.php?year=2014#001

Cargo delivery mission under the NASA Commercial Orbital Transportation Services (COTS) agreement. The Cygnus pressurized cargo vessel is based the on the Multi-Purpose Logistics Module (MPLM) carried as Shuttle cargo, and the avionics have been developed for other satellites. Carried the Nanoracks CM3 cubesat cluster, for launch from the ISS, consisting of 28 satellites of the Planet Labs Flock 1A, SkyCube ArduSat-2), LithuanicaSat, LitSat, and UAPSat. Cygnus was captured by the ISS Remote Manipulator 2014 Jan 12 at 11:08 UTC and docked with the downward-facing port of Unity at 13:05 UTC. Undocked Feb 18 at 10:04 UTC and released from the Remote Manipulator at 11:31 UTC. Retro-fire Oct 23 at 17:41 UTC led to a destructive re-entry at 18:16 UTC with any surviving fragments hitting the surface of the southern Pacific Ocean 20-30 minutes later.

1U Cubesat - built using crowdsourcing for funds. Aimed to 'Tweet' from space and provide Earth images on demand from users with a smartphone App. Near the end of life, it was intended to inflate a balloon to make it more visible and to accelerate orbit decay. In the event, the solar panels and aerials did not deploy on reaching orbit and, as a result, the balloon did not inflate. The mission was declared a loss on July 28. Carried to ISS by Cygnus Orb 1 (2014-003A/39502) as part of the Nanoracks CM3 cubesat cluster.

Egyptian remote sensing satellite built under contract by Russia's Energiya company. Separated from launch vehicle at 16:28 UTC. Launch was put on hold 2011 following all contact being lost with EgyptSat 1. Orbit requirement was subsequently changed from sun-synchronous. From April 30 to July 11, Egyptsat 2 fired a thruster at successive passages through orbital apogee in order to produce the 714 km, circular, operational orbit. A major system failure around 2015 Apr 12 means that the satellite is no longer operating.

3U Cubesat holding 104 postage stamp shape/size (35mm x 35mm) individual satellites for organisations that sponsored them - each satellite was designed to transmit a unique code to identify mission sponsors plus data from a small sensor. They were intended to be released May 4 at 19:40 UTC as a result of a timer set for 16 days after Kicksat activation. On Apr 30, an unexpected hardware 'reset' caused the timer to re-start and set release for May 16 - Kicksat, unfortunately, re-entered on May 14. KickSat itself carried carries logos and signatures of individuals and organisations that sponsored the launch with donations. Part of NASA's ELaNa 5 Cubesat initiative.

Probably a third generation Satellite Data System government/military communications satellite aimed at geosynchronous orbit. Launch delayed 4 min from originally announced time, reportedly to avoid a possible collision with an object already in orbit. The Centaur stage of the Atlas V was not catalogued - it was intentionally sent toward a destructive re-entry at the end of its first circuit. Any surviving fragments hit the Surface of the Pacific Ocean shortly after 22:00 UTC near 14° north, 175° west.

Small satellite with low thrust ion engine to demonstrate orbit changing capability. Used its own Briz-KM rocket body (2014-028D/39764) as a station-keeping target. Detected by US tracking sensors and originally catalogued as debris, it was not included in early announcements of the launch. Early 2014 July - started a series of manoeuvres to reduce the separation in orbit planes between itself and the Briz-KM. 2014 November 8/9 it matched planes with the rocket and manoeuvred alongside it, co-orbiting within a few tens of metres. The experiment may then have been complete because, as of 2014 Dec 1, the satellite began identifying itself as amateur radio satellite Radio Sputnik 47 (RS-47). 2021 Dec - Space-Track reported 22 debris items from a partial break-up that occurred on Oct 23 that year at ~20:00 UTC. Further disintegrated 2023 Jan 4.

Microgravity research satellite, based on the Zenit reconsat re-entry module and the instrument unit from the Yantar satellite, making it similar to Bion-M. Previous Photon missions used the standard Zenit instrument unit. Payload includes a number of material processing experiments and biological samples. Mission intended to last 60 days but as of Jul 23, Photon was not accepting radio commands. Communication was re-established seven days later but, as a result of the problem, the satellite was not manoeuvred to the intended 550 km circular orbit. September 27 - the State Commission for the flight announced that landing would be September 1, and the re-entry module landed near Orenburg, Russia.

Note - Listed here because of similarity in name to previous Bion missions but does not truly belong among the Zenit satellites.

Aimed at 22300 km circular orbit with 55° inclination, it was delivered to an incorrect orbit when the Fregat stage of the Soyuz rocket failed to complete its second firing properly. The Fregat was wrongly oriented. An independent enquiry board reported 2014 October that it was due to a design flaw that resulted in freezing of propellant in steering thruster feed lines. Subsequently manoeuvred into an orbit where it could provide a useful service. Navigation signal switched on 2014 Nov 29.

Carrying a cargo to the ISS under NASA's Commercial Resupply Services (CRS) contract, including the ISS-RapidScat instrument as a replacement for NASA's QuikScat satellite (1999-034A/25789) to monitor ocean winds for climate research, weather predictions, and hurricanes. Launch attempt September 20 was called off due to bad weather in the final stages of countdown. Captured by ISS Remote Manipulator System Sep 23 at 10:52 UTC, docked with lower port of the Harmony node at 13:27 UTC - retaining bolts were driven home 3-4 minutes later. Undocked from Harmony Oct 25 and released into independent orbit at 13:57 UTC. Retro-fire at 18:43 UTC led to splashdown in Pacific Ocean near 33°.25 N 122°.79 W at 19:38 UTC ±1 min.The launching rocket was not catalogued because it was caused to re-enter above the Indian Ocean about 2.5 hrs after launch.

Crew to ISS - Alexander Samokutyaev, Yelena Serova and Barry Wilmore. The port-side solar panel failed to open at launch but was subsequently released shortly after docking with the ISS, possibly as a result of jarring from the docking impact or thermal stresses resulting from the changing sun angle around the ISS orbit. Docked with the port on the Poisk module September 26 at 02:11 UTC. The initial orbit shown is an estimate based on data released by TsUP. Undocked 2015 Mar 11 and 22:44 UTC carrying Samokutayev, Serova and Wilmore. Touched down at at 02:15 UTC 147 km from the town Dzhezkazgan in Kazakhstan.

Mission obscure but may be be a combined communications payload (Luch) for use by satellites in LEO, and an electronic intelligence gathering ELINT payload (Olympus) - possibly for the Security Service of the Russian Federation (FSB). It also carries a payload that provides a reference signal to increase navigational accuracy for GLONASS users. The Briz-M stack separated from the Proton third stage at 20:32 UTC. Luch separated from the Briz-M Sep 28 at 05:26 UTC. Before launch there were indications that it was heading for 95° east but it has occupied several different locations for brief periods of time, interspersed with period of drift, maybe as a test of effectiveness.

Engineering test mission for components of a Lunar sample return mission. At about 18:20 UTC, the CZ-3C upper-stage re-ignited for a 3-4 minute firing to push itself from LEO into a trajectory aimed at the Moon. The test vehicle separated from the launch vehicle at a distance of 5000 km from Earth shortly after engine shut-down. The journey to the Moon and subsequent return to Earth was a full command and control ‘dress rehearsal’ for Chang'e 5 in 2017 including setting up the Earthbound trajectory, conducting mid-course corrections, tracking, atmosphere re-entry and vehicle recovery. The descent vehicle separated from the main spacecraft Oct 31 at 21:52 UTC, entered the Earth's atmosphere and landed on the Siziwang Banner of Inner Mongolia at 22:42 UTC. The main spacecraft then made a thruster firing to ensure that it remained in orbit heading for the Earth-Moon L2 Lagrange Point where it arrived 2014 Nov 27 before returning to the Moon. Entered orbit the Moon 2015 Jan 13. For about three months it conducted engineering tests relating to spacecraft operation in lunar orbit . The initial orbit shown describes the outbound trajectory. The second listed orbit is for the Earth return leg of the mission, it was computed by Cees Bassa.

Payload provided by the company Luxspace, named to commemorate the late Professor Manfred Fuchs. 4M included a radio transmitter, permanently attached to the launch vehicle upper stage, operating in the 2m amateur band designed to operate continuously throughout a complete circuit of the Earth-Moon system and, hopefully, longer. In the event, it fell silent on November 11 when the sun angle on its solar panel was insufficient to provide enough charging current. The orbit shown describes the outbound trajectory towards the Moon.
