2016 - Launches to Orbit and Beyond

Listed are launches, irrespective of outcome, that were irretrievably committed to flight towards orbit or intended to accelerate the payload to escape velocity. The following notes should help with understanding the launch lists.

Launch times are in UTC and are from the launching agency or estimated by 'walking back' along the ground track to the launch site. Most orbit data and decay information comes from SpaceTrack but it occasionally contains inconsistencies (eg - incorrect re-entry dates or early sets of elements allocated to the wrong object) that need to be corrected from other sources.

To fill the gaps where elements are not formally published, usually because they have a classification of "Secret", some orbits are based on amateur observations using visual and radio techniques. Such data is published near-daily by Mike McCants, and the source observations along with observers' derived orbits can often be found in the web-based Seesat-L discussion group. Occasionally, early orbit data are published by satellite owners. In extreme cases, orbits are estimated from public data.

Space-Track occasionally fails to allocate names to objects in its catalogue. The SATNOGS online database of radio observations sometimes provides pointers to which Catalogue Number belongs to a satellite being tracked by its contributors.

Apogee and perigee are measured against a spherical Earth situated at the focus of the orbital ellipse and with a radius of 6378.145 km. Shown is the Anomalistic Period, or time to complete one circuit of the ellipse. It is not the same as the time taken to complete one circuit of the Earth. Care should be exercised when comparing with other published orbits because they may have been derived using a different model.

Users can go straight to specific launches by pointing to the page URL followed by the three digit launch number, eg - https://www.OrbitalFocus/Diaries/Launches/Launches.php?year=2016#001

Fourth mission in US-European series of satellite missions to provide continuous measurements of the height of the ocean surface. It extends the studies begun by the TOPEX/Poseidon (1992-052A/22076), Jason 1 (2001-055A/26997) and OSTM/Jason 2 (2008-032A/33105) missions. Precise time: 18:42:18 UTC at the start of a 30s window to ensure orbit was co-planar with TOPEX/Poseidon and Jason 2. Feb 12 - Jason 3 fell into formation with Jason 2. Upper stage of the Falcon 9 was not catalogued because it was de-orbited shortly before the end of its first circuit of the Earth. First stage of Falcon 9 landed on SpaceX drone ship located near 120°.75 west, 32°.125 north but was damaged when one of its four landing legs failed and it fell over.

in space
Japanese science satellite equipped with imaging and spectroscopy systems looking at the Hard X-ray, Soft X-ray and Gamma-ray portions of the spectrum. Separated from the launch vehicle at 05:59 UTC. The name means 'pupil of the eye'. 2016 Mar 26, JAXA reported that Hitomi failed to conduct a communication session as expected at 07:40 UTC. JSpOC catalogued debris items in a similar orbit to the satellite that appeared earlier in the day - around 01:24 UTC. They included the two solar arrays and are the result of a breakup when Hitomi developed a significant tumble.

Remote sensing using Geoton 1 imaging system. Earlier launch attempt aborted at last moment on Mar 12 when sensors detected a problem in the Soyuz launch vehicle as the startup command was issued. Orbit lowered 2022 November in order to conduct rendezvous manoeuvres with Cosmos 2562 (54110, 2022-137B) that continued until 2023 July 26. There followed a period of natural orbit decay and a thruster-firing on Oct 10. Retro-fire 2023 Oct 17 at about 07:20 UTC above central Asia led to re-entry above the Pacific Ocean on a northbound track near 59° south, 112° west at about 08:05 UTC.

Two part European spacecraft aimed at Mars Exploration, particularly to seek out evidence of living organisms now or in the past. The Trace Gas Orbiter (TGO) is to study trace gases in the Martian atmosphere from orbit. Of special interest are the abundance and distribution of methane. It entered orbit around Mars 2016 Oct 19 and after 12 months of aerobraking it reached its operational orbit. Schiaparelli is an entry, descent and landing demonstrator module to demonstrate the capability of European industry and was aimed at a controlled landing on the surface of Mars. Schiaparelli separated from TGO Oct 14, on the approach to Mars, and headed for landing Oct 19 but was detroyed on impact when the parachute and heat shield faided to separate cleanly. Launch date was the opening of a window that closed Mar 25. Precise launch time 09:31:42 UTC.

Fifth Cygnus resupply mission to ISS. Numbered out of sequence for administrative reasons. Time was the opening of a 30 minute window. Second of two launches switched to Atlas V as a result of the loss of Cygnus Orb 3 2014 Oct when the Antares launch vehicle exploded. Atlas first stage shut down early so Centaur fired for longer in order to achieve orbit, trajectory was slightly modified from that planned as a result. Captured by ISS Remote Manipulator Mar 26 at 10:51:21 UTC and docked with the downward-facing port on Unity at 14:52 UTC. Undocked using the ISS Remote Manipulator at Jun 14 at 11:43 UTC. Released from the manipulator at 13:30 UTC. Successfully released four of five Lemur-2 Cubesats Jun 20 but a fifth one (BeccaDewey) failed to exit its Nanoracks deployer. Sent to destructive re-entry Jun 22 with atmospheric entry occurring at 13:29 UTC.

Narrowband tactical comsat for geosynchronous orbit, designed to work with highly portable receiver/transmitter equipment. Fourth satellite in a constellation of five, expected location 70º-75º east. Rôle of MUOS 5 is to act as an on-orbit spare to cover for problems with one of the other four satellites. Suffered a malfunction after reaching space and appears to be stranded in intermediate transfer orbit after making a thruster firing to raise perigee. Orbital data based on observations by amateur satellite trackers.

Half-scale model of the descent module of a future Chinese piloted spacecraft with attached YZ-1A rocket stage. The YZ-1A re-ignited at least twice and released four satellites into a variety of orbits, then fired its rocket engine again Jun 26 around 07:15 UTC to set it on course for destructive re-entry. The descent module separated to make its own re-entry and, after opening a parachute, landed in the Badain Jaran Desert of Inner Mongolia at 07:41 UTC. The first & third orbits listed are estimates.

Successfully collected surface sample 2020 Oct 20 at 22:13 UTC for return to Earth. 2021 May 10, the spacecraft departed Bennu. 2024 Sep 24 at 10:42 UTC, the sample return container was detached. The vehicle then made a small trajectory correction in order to avoid re-entry into the Earth's atmosphere and put it onto a trajectory that will take it to minor planet Apophis with arrival due 2029.

One of a pair of simultaneously-launched commercial remote sensing satellites operated by Beijing Space View Technology Co. Ltd. of China. Expected to reach 520 km circular orbit, the CZ-2D upper stage appears to have failed to make a circularisation burn. The satellite subsequently used its own propellant to raise perigee to operational height.
