2018 - Launches to Orbit and Beyond

Listed are launches, irrespective of outcome, that were irretrievably committed to flight towards orbit or intended to accelerate the payload to escape velocity. The following notes should help with understanding the launch lists.

Launch times are in UTC and are either from the launching agency or estimated by 'walking back' along the ground track to the launch site. Most orbit data and decay information comes from SpaceTrack. The Space-Track data occasionally contains inconsistencies (eg - incorrect re-entry dates or early sets of elements allocated to the wrong object) that need to be corrected from other sources.

To fill the gaps where elements are not formally published, usually because they have a classification of "Secret", some orbits are based on amateur observations. Such data is published near-daily by Mike McCants. Occasionally, orbits are estimated by myself from public data.

Space-Track sometimes has insufficient information to allocate names to objects in its catalogue. In these cases, names are derived from public information.

Apogee and perigee are measured against a spherical Earth with a radius of 6378.145 km, assumed to be situated at the focus of the orbital ellipse. The value for the orbital period is the Anomalistic Period, or time to complete one circuit of the ellipse. It is not the same as the time taken to complete one circuit of the Earth. Care should be exercised when comparing Orbital Focus data with other published orbits because they may have been derived using a different model.

Users can go straight to specific launches by pointing to the page URL followed by the three digit launch number, eg - https://www.OrbitalFocus/Diaries/Launches/Launches.php?year=2018#001

You can keep up to date with changes or mission events by following Orbital Focus at Blue Sky.

Classified US Government payload. Purpose, mission outcome and orbit unknown. Appears to have re-entered the Earth's atmosphere on the day of launch, an event that is unlikely to have been intended. SpaceX reported that the launch vehicle completed its mission as planned. The launch azimuth suggested it was heading for an inclination of about 50°. Originally scheduled for launch 2017 Nov 17 from Kennedy SC but launch delayed (and launch pad switched) because of an issue with a Falcon 9 payload shroud on another mission.

Small satellite from the University of Surrey, England. Released two Cubesats for use in orbital debris removal experiments. 2019 Feb 8, a harpoon capture device was demonstrated by firing at target carried by an inflatable boom extended from the satellite body. RemoveDEBRIS was intended to extend a drag device to take itself out of orbit. It failed to deploy when commanded 2019 Mar 4 and the orbit decayed naturally.

Probably military in nature and maybe intended for signals intelligence gathering (SIGINT). Initially in co-orbit with TJS-3 payload 2 and was probably attached to it on arrival at their original GEO station. Commenced eastward drift 2019 May 20 to begin a stop-start journey around the geosynchronous belt. From 2019 Sep - Dec, it stopped alongside Shijian 13 (42662/2017-018A) at 111° east, then 2020 Feb - 2021 Aug it was co-located with Shijian 20 (44910/2019-097A) at 88° east before commencing a westward drift. 2021 Oct it settled near 59° east alongside 2018-110C from where it had originally departed, remaining there until 2022 Jul 5. Continued to follow GEO belt and made further stops 2022 Sep 13 at 88° east near USA 233 (38070/2012-003A)) and 2023 Feb 8 at 137°.5 east near USA 298 (45465/2020-022B).

Instrumented rocket body - precise mission not known but almost certainly connected with TJS 3. Moved TJS 3 from transfer orbit to geosynchronous drift orbit and then to its GEO location where it released the satellite. Remained at 59° east after TJS 3 departed 2019 May 20 then returned to the location 2021 October. Ceased station keeping and commenced manoeuvre to graveyard orbit 2021 November.
