Resurs-F1 Missions

Resurs-F1 was specialised development of the Zenit photo-imaging satellite. General purpose cameras were replaced with cameras loaded with film capable of photographing in specific parts of the visible and near infrared spectrum to detect wavelengths associated with vegetation and specific geoplogical features.

Resurs surveyed large parts of the Soviet Union as well as other countries. While the images allowed assessments of the crop yields in the USSR, they were also a powerful economic tool for use when dealing with countries less aligned with the USSR.

Initially, flights were performed under the 'Cosmos' label but, as the USSR began to disintegrate, the naming convention changed to reveal their true nature.

One mission stands out, that of Resurs-500 (1992-075A/22217) in that it was stripped of its cameras in order to provide room for 19 packages of 'souvenirs' for delivery to the USA on the occasion of the 500th Anniversary of Columbus's voyage. The flight was flagged as the first commercial launch of the Soyus rocket by Russia. Tagging it with the name Resurs when it wasn't an Earth Resources mission probably stems from the name being more 'peace-oriented' than the clandestine 'Zenit' or one of its associated code names.
